My inspirational story revolves around women in art. In 2012, I attended an art symposium where the guest speaker expressed his passion for collecting artwork. However, he admitted that at one point in his art journey, he stopped collecting pieces from female artists. When questioned about his decision, he explained that he believed female artists often abandoned their art after marriage, causing their artistic expression to wither, which he considered detrimental to his art collection.
Upon hearing his words, I made a personal commitment to challenge this narrative and leave a lasting impact with my art. Fast forward to 2017, five years later, I held an exhibition in Lagos, and the same guest artist unknowingly purchased some of my artworks. He expressed his admiration for the pieces, not realizing they were mine. When I revealed my identity as both the artist and a married woman, I reminded him of his previous stance from five years ago. This revelation left him speechless and reshaped his perspective on women in art.
This experience reinforced my determination to continue creating and never let go of my art.
